Ham Baker Pipelines Invest in New Paint Plant

Ham Baker Pipelines has invested £100,000 in a new fittings paint plant at its Ilkeston site in Derbyshire. The new facility with a capacity of around 600 pieces per week, means the pipeline specialists have reduced their already impressive lead times further and now have complete quality control of their finished products.

General Manager Darren Wood says: “Quality is critical in our industry and customers expect products which are fit for purpose in all circumstances. This investment means we have responsibility from beginning to end and can test product throughout the process to guarantee its integrity.”

Two full time jobs have been created with the opening of the paint plant, utilising two highly skilled employees.
Having been cast, the fittings are shot blasted using fine grit to remove any debris and surface imperfections before they are heated to around 300ºc for an hour to assist the epoxy bonding process.

Air is blown over the fittings after heating again to remove any debris before spraying. Tests are then carried out after cooling to ensure the correct level of coating has been applied.

Further long-term tests are carried out on an ongoing basis to ensure continued quality including adhesion tests, impact tests as well as coat and bend tests.

Ham Baker Pipelines supplies a number of leading utilities and has expanded its operations significantly over the last 12 months, introducing a new range of FittoSize couplings into the UK market. They have also won a number of competitive tenders and contract extensions including two mini-tenders for Scottish Water, a new framework agreement with Northumbrian Water and contract extension with Yorkshire Water.
