Work Hard, Fundraise Hard!

Having described it as one of the best things he has ever done in his life, Darren Wood, General Manager of Ham Baker Pipelines has well and truly been bitten by the mountain climbing bug.

Not surprising really when you consider the achievement and the £17,000 plus he and his water industry colleagues raised for four charities climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

Battling through altitude sickness, extreme temperatures, fatigue and hunger, Darren his water industry colleagues collectively known as ‘The Drain Gang’, reached the Uhuru summit following a gruelling seven-day 70km trek through the Tanzanian rainforest.

Kilimanjaro is the tallest freestanding mountain in the world and the group set off in the dead of night to reach the 19,341ft summit at dawn, an exhilarating experience.

The team successfully raised £17,841.88 for four charities: WaterAid, Breast Cancer Care, MacMillan Cancer Support and Help for Heroes.

Darren and colleagues from Ham Baker were also in action fundraising a couple of weeks before the climb, only this time speed rather than height provided the adrenaline rush at the GDM Lindex 17th annual karting event.

While none of the team turned out to be the next Sebastian Vettel, great fun was had by everyone and £2965 was raised for this year’s chosen charity, Blood Bikes
